Here is a rail-over job in which I kept the existing railing and posts and refinished them with a chocolate stain. The hardwood floor was also stripped and refinished. Next I put new treads and powder coated black metal spindles. The basement previously had 2 railings with spindles directly into the treads. I removed the rails, moved them over to the side of the stringers in order to create more space. I finished off the railing by S-turning into the wall and 2nd floor post.
